Is there a cost to the Bootcamp and the Programme?
The Microsoft Professional Programme in Data Science is free, although there is a cost (£80 RRP) for the Certificates of Completion. You’ll need to achieve 10 of those certificates to gain your full qualification. Microsoft, in conjunction with your local channel partner, is funding the first one for successful applicants, which you should complete by the end of the Bootcamp. Whilst this course and the first certificate is provided free of charge, they believe in paying things forward, so they are seeking a nominal donation (suggested £10) to the SmartWorks charity. Microsoft will match all donations pound for pound.
Why is Microsoft running the Bootcamp?
The women who will change the world tomorrow must start learning digital skills today. Microsoft wants more women from a range of diverse backgrounds and abilities to be inspired by a potential career in technology.
Cindy Rose, Chief Executive of Microsoft UK, said: “Microsoft has a strong mission to empower every person and organisation on the planet to achieve more. That puts diversity and inclusion at the heart of what we do and who we are. We are reaching out to women across the UK who want to empower themselves by acquiring new digital skills but may be unsure where to begin.”
What is Data Science?
Data scientists study large amounts of information in an organisation and communicate it to leaders who can act upon it. There is growing demand for the role in companies in almost every industry, as bosses seek to understand more about their operations and customers. It is estimated that more than 500,000 highly skilled workers will be needed to fill digital roles by 2022. That figure is three times the number of UK computer science graduates that the UK has produced over the past 10 years, and only 5% of that total has been female. Just 26% of data professionals are women, according to software company Better Buys.
