Women Returners is partnering with the Law Society and 20 legal employers to develop and deliver a new cross-company returnship programme, with support from the UK Government Equalities Office Returners Fund. The programme will run for 6 months and placements will be available in Manchester, Leeds and surrounding areas. The programme is targeted at experienced legal professionals, both women and men, who are looking to return to work after an extended career break of 12 months or more and who are interested in returning to private practice.

The 20 participating companies range from large international law firms to small local firms: Bailoran Solicitors, Barton Legal Limited, CMS, DAC Beachcroft, DWF, Emsleys Solicitors, Express Solicitors, EY Riverview Law, Fieldfisher, Forbes Solicitors, Gateley Plc, Horwich Farrelly, Northone Solicitors, Pinsent Masons, Robinson Ralph, rradar, Squire Patton Boggs, Tapestry Compliance, Vista Employer Services Ltd and Widdows Pilling & Co.

How will you benefit from the programme?

The programme offers a professionally-paid 6-month placement with one of the participating employers, running from February to July 2019.

The programme will equip you with the skills, knowledge and experience to enable you to apply for permanent roles at end of programme.

You will receive internal mentoring, together with the Career Returners Coaching Programme support from Women Returners to help you to transition successfully back into the workplace. As coaching support will be delivered centrally in each city, you will benefit from a large supportive peer network of like-minded people.

The Law Society will provide successful participants technical training, informal mentoring from their Back to Law Ambassadors, networking opportunities and other legal support.

Flexible working options may be available during and after the programme depending on the role.

Who are the participating organisations looking for?

The programme is targeted at individuals with a relevant legal background who have taken a career break of 12 months or more. Due to the focus of the Returners Fund, applications are particularly welcome from people who have taken time out to look after children or elderly/sick relatives. You may have been working on a small-scale basis to fit around your other commitments or have not done any paid work for a number of years.

In terms of legal experience, each company will have different criteria according to the roles available. Please make sure that your legal career break is prominent and clear on your CV.
