Are you looking to step back into a professional role after a career break?

The Heathrow Career Returners Programme is a path back into a professional role for men and women who have taken a career break. You will bring your established skills and business experience to Heathrow, as you take on a role within their operations or corporate functions. Through a structured six-month placement starting in November 2018, you will complete meaningful work in a supportive environment, whilst exploring opportunities for continuing a career at Heathrow. You will receive specialised coaching, together with mentoring and training support. 

This opportunity is open to anyone who has been on a career break for two or more years. This could consist of a period of continuous absence from the workplace, or a period where you have been working outside of your established professional career following a period of absence from the workplace.

What is Heathrow looking for? 

Heathrow has identified specific opportunities for individuals with experience or transferable skills within the following functional areas:

Project Management 

Working within the Development and Expansion functions, Heathrow’s team of project managers delivers capital projects across the airport. They play a critical role in helping Heathrow reach their vision, safely and sustainably delivering quality projects for passengers and customers. Over the past ten years, the team has been responsible for delivering over £11 billion of investment in a diverse portfolio of projects. 

They are looking to recruit project management returners, who will bring experience of capital construction projects. 


Technology is the bedrock of Heathrow. The airport would grind to a halt without it. Heathrow’s IT department collaborate with industry leaders to provide ground-breaking technology to allow their colleagues to operate safely and more efficiently. They support the journey of Heathrow’s passengers through innovation and industry leading solutions. The team works on projects that have a direct impact on millions of passengers each year.  

They are looking for passionate candidates with experience of working within an outsourced IT Service Delivery model. 

Human Resources 

Heathrow is a great place to work, and the People Team want to help people fulfil their potential and work together to lead change across Heathrow with energy and pride. They build amazing employee experiences, from learning initiatives to career planning. A big focus for them is on creating careers, not just jobs, and building high performing teams. They develop the skills needed to operate the airport of today and the Heathrow of the future. 

They are looking for someone with experience in leading HR teams or projects. The successful candidate will have a role crafted to match their skills and experience. 

Engineering and Continuous Improvement

It takes talented teams working behind the scenes to keep Heathrow airport running smoothly. It’s meaningful, wide-reaching work. From water to energy, rail to roads, Heathrow’s Engineering and Asset Management Teams work across the airport on a huge range of development, construction, facilities management and maintenance projects; from their automated transport pods to the biomass energy plant.  

They are looking for individuals experienced in continuous improvement or electrical engineering.

Successful candidates will be invited to a telephone interview in week commencing 24th September, before a final in-person assessment on 10th or 11th October 2018.
