Why join the Career Returners Programme?

The Heathrow Career Returners Programme is a pathway back into a professional role for those who have taken a career break. You will bring your established skills and business experience to Heathrow, as you take on a role within their operation or corporate functions. Through a structured six-month placement starting in November 2019, you will complete meaningful work in a supportive environment, whilst exploring opportunities for continuing a career at Heathrow. You will receive specialised coaching, together with mentoring and training support.

This opportunity is open to anyone who has been on a career break for two or more years. This could consist of a period of continuous absence from the workplace, or a period where you have been working outside of your established professional career.

Heathrow values diversity and this programme will provide the platform for you to mature your own individual strengths. They recognise that returning to work after a long break can prove challenging – so they’ll do all that they can to make the transition smooth. They embrace agile and flexible approaches to working, and they’re committed to supporting all their colleagues to find the right work-life balance.

What is Heathrow looking for?

Heathrow has identified specific opportunities for individuals with experience or transferable skills within the following functional areas:

Change Programmes

Programme Magenta aims to enable Heathrow’s growth and build strong foundations for their future by transforming the way they work and implementing a new ERP platform. As part of the transformation programme, there will be a change workstream that sets the direction for how they want to transform, how they implement the change and how they begin to realise the benefits and embed new ways of working.

The Change Manager role will work as part of the change workstream and work with the workstream lead to deliver the change workstream ensuring business benefits and investment are maximised. You will help to influence and take on responsibility to deliver change projects and initiatives within the change workstream. You would also be the workstream lead for initiatives such as change readiness, capability and skills assessments, people and culture change.

Commercial

As the UK’s growing international airport, it’s vital for Heathrow to maintain a sharp commercial edge. Their Commercial team’s purpose is to ‘grow revenue to grow Heathrow’. It’s a multi-award-winning team that prides itself on delivering what their passengers want today and in the future.

They are looking for candidates with experience in managing day-to-day commercial operations and winning new business. The role will involve overseeing projects from inception to completion and identifying and mitigating risks involved. The ability to nurture relationships with their supply chain and stakeholders throughout projects is also crucial. The successful applicant will have great communication, teamwork, leadership and analytical skills.

Engineering

Engineering is the lifeblood of Heathrow. Their engineering teams work across the airport on a huge range of state-of-the-art development, construction and maintenance projects. Together, they are responsible for £14bn worth of assets, including 4 million square meters of airfield pavements, 180km of roads, 33 surface car parks, 50 tunnels and 31 bridges, not to mention the largest private water distribution system in Europe.

Your role could see you become involved in projects from across the asset lifecycle – whether requirement, concept, design, build or maintenance. You’ll be part of the team who set the strategies and standards for the business to follow.

Operations

It takes great collaboration and teamwork to give passengers the best airport service in the world. Heathrow’s operations cover a spectrum of activities, from Baggage and Customer Service, to Airport and Airside Operations. This means you could be taking on a role with projects that impact the passenger journey from beginning to end – from leading their customer-facing teams to delivering excellent service, through to ensuring that every single one of the 11,500 bags passing through their baggage system every hour are safely reunited with their owners. They collaborate across departments to bring together information, people and planning, and focus on improving every day.

They are looking for individuals with a strong leadership background who have an interest or experience in one of the following areas: Safety and Compliance, Stakeholder Management, Project Management and Leading Customer Service.

Project Management – Construction

It’s an exciting time to be part of the Heathrow team. In June 2018, Parliament gave them the go ahead for Expansion. This isn’t just about a new runway. It’s about transforming the UK’s hub airport and securing the UK’s future place in the world. This landmark decision will generate economic growth benefits worth up to £187 billion and create up to 180,000 new jobs across the UK. What’s more, it’ll pave the way for new domestic routes and up to 40 new international destinations.  The work to deliver this huge project has already begun, which is why they’re looking for a whole host of people to join Heathrow.

Join Heathrow as a Project Manager in Construction to deliver impactful projects and their associated activities from conception through to completion, delivering work that meets project requirements and gives a great passenger experience. You will have scope to make your mark on what will become one of Europe’s largest infrastructure projects.

IT

Technology is the bedrock of Heathrow. The airport would grind to a halt without it. Heathrow’s IT department collaborate with industry leaders to provide ground-breaking technology to allow their colleagues to operate safely and more efficiently. They support the journey of Heathrow’s passengers through innovation and industry leading solutions. The team works on projects that have a direct impact on millions of passengers each year.

They are looking for individuals who have an interest or experience in one of the following areas: IT Strategy Manager, IT Product Owner, IT Project Manager and IT Business Analyst.
